Mama & Papa Bean in Barcelona

Mandrew's beany parents recently had an incredible travel adventure of their own, and as they were sharing some of their fun stories with us during our last FaceTime chat, we thought it would be fun to have them put them down in writing for our blog.  So, with no further ado, we present the first of their entries (and the first ever Two Bein' Chili guest post), Barcelona.

After retiring, Donna and I have started to take some trips of a lifetime – this first one being a Mediterranean trip. On May 13th, we flew to Barcelona to spend a few days there, before boarding a ship that cruised the Mediterranean for 12 days. The cruise ended in Venice, where we spent a few days. Then we flew to London to spend a few more days before flying home on June 4th.

We had a great trip! Andrew and Chelsea encouraged me to blog about it and share some pics, so that is what I’ve done. This first blog entry is about our adventures in Barcelona.

We flew directly from Toronto to Barcelona, and were shuttled from the airport to our hotel just north of the centre of the city. We spent a few days in Barcelona prior to boarding the ship for our cruise. Barcelona is: Spain’s second biggest city; the capital of the Catalan people (distinct from the Spanish people, e.g., in Madrid); and the home of Columbus, Gaudi, Dali, and teenage Picasso.

Barcelona is a beautiful city, with lots to see and enjoy. During our first couple of days there we used the Hop on Hop off bus that was included in our vacation package – to get the lay of the land. During our stay we also used the fine metro to get around and did a lot of walking.

Many of the sites we saw were designed by Antoni Gaudi - Barcelona’s main Modernista architect. The Sagrada Familia is the most famous, and we enjoyed exploring it inside and out.  There were also lots of other unusual things to see, like a large sculpture by Joan Miro entitled, "Woman and Bird".  I can see the bird, but where's the woman? (Yup, Mandrew's dad makes penis jokes, too).

Donna and I enjoyed our time in Barcelona - the sites, the food, and not least - the wine.  On May 18th, we boarded the ship for our Mediterranean cruise.  Stay tuned for more!
